About Firn

A calm browser, made by one person in Oregon.

Why Firn

I loved what Arc and Zen did for browsing. I just couldn't get anyone I know to use them.

Tabs down the side. Spaces for the different parts of your life. A quieter screen. They're great ideas, but they arrived with shortcuts to memorize and settings to tune, and most people bounced off.

Firn keeps the good ideas and drops the homework. It should feel calm the moment you open it, and stay out of your way after that.

The word

firn/fɪrn/noun

Snow that has made it through a whole season. Older than fresh snow, not yet glacier ice, slowly settling into something that lasts.

From the Swiss German for “last year’s”.

My family is German-Swiss, so the name felt like mine the moment I found it.

It's also what I want Firn to be. Not the newest, loudest thing on the mountain. Something that settles in and stays.

How it should feel

A small cabin outside Sisters, Oregon. It snowed overnight. The sun is just coming up, the Three Sisters are turning pink, and you've got a hot cup of coffee in your hands.

Nothing needs you yet. That's the feeling Firn is chasing: warm color, soft light, a little texture, and plenty of room to breathe. Even dark mode is the blue hour just before sunrise.

Who's making it

I'm David, a songwriter in Oregon. I'm not a professional developer. I build Firn on evenings and weekends with Claude, an AI from Anthropic, as my coding partner.

I decide what Firn is and how it should feel. Claude and I write the code together, and we catch each other's mistakes. All of it is open source on GitHub, so you never have to take my word for anything.

What I promise

  • No tracking. Firn has no telemetry and doesn't watch what you do.
  • No ads. Ad and tracker blocking are built in and on from the start.
  • No account. Your tabs, history, and passwords stay on your device.
  • Free and open. No price, no premium tier. The code is public.
Thanks for being here.David
